Framed photograph from the estate of UBC Professor Margaret A. Campbell, given to Glennis Zilm and Ethel Warbinek in August 1992 by Jean Campbell, sister of Margaret Campbell. Photograph shows a class of 42 students, circa 1944-1946 (Campbell entered the School of Nursing in September 1944 and completed her course June 8, 1947). Margaret Campbell is second row from front, third from right. The students shown are probably "juniors"--that is, first year students who have already received their caps and student pins (after c. 6 months). The students appear to be wearing black stockings. It would be interesting to find out why two students in the back row are in blue uniforms--although they may have entered earlier and been held back because of illness or other reason. The uniforms are distinctive because during World War II the VGH School was unable to obtain the blue material used for student uniforms and had to use white (for some classes). Students were given a blue armband to indicate their student status (this information comes from Dorothy Logan, who is active with the VGH Alumnae and is working on a History of the School). Information about the cost of uniforms, design, etc, is available in Margaret Campbell's scrapbook which is also in the archive.
